Roadmap

A core principle of the design system is 'continues improvement' and hence, there is constant development expected to improve and enhance the design system.

The roadmap will record all changes to the design system, and aim to address what is coming in the future.


Launched design system 1.0

Completed

The design language system 1.0 was released as a manual for federal government entities (FGEs) to plan and arrange content on their websites with simplicity and creativity.

The first of it's kind, the design language system set precedence to consistent design and put forward a set of guidelines to help acheive accessible user experience.

The launch of the design system 2.0

Completed

The design system 2.0 was is leap forward into the creation of a robust and consistent design system for the United Arab Emirates government.

Built to enhance the earlier version, the design system now offers a set of components, blocks, patterns and updated guidelines to help federal government entities (FGE's) build better communication.

Workshops and trainings

The new design system will be introduced in a series of workshops, to help ministries and authorities of the federal government adopt the use of the design system.

Upgrade and enhancements - version 2.1

Completed

Enhancements and upgrades to the design system based on feedback from entities.

  • An update was made to the alert component that ensures accessibility improvements and testing against colour contrast checker for a AA level rating.
  • Icon size of alerts have been increased and call to actions were made to match colour combinations.
  • Header navigation dropdown menu has been updated to remove a background colour on link items. This was suggested as something not to be forced. Link colors will change on hover and underline will be added, however background colour changes are left as a choice.
  • Compatibility testing on existing class names shows no breaking changes

Upgrade and enhancements - version 2.1.3

  • The UAE emblem has been updated to reflect a change as per brand requirements.
  • On the Arabic version of websites, the primary navigation (when 7 items are included) would split into 2 lines per item due to the length of the word. A fix has been applied to reduce font size, padding etc. For tablet version only, the first "Home" link is an icon only.
  • Other minor underlying enhacements.

We continue to push updates and upgrades to the design system. The collective data gathered will help us plan further on what are better use cases of components, patterns and blocks.

Q4 upgrade and enhancements - version 2.3

Planned

A major improvement will the creation of all components in Next.Js and ReactJS. The design system will support the creation of web applications using JS frameworks as the recommended method, and will support ReactJS and Next.js as the primary libraries by creating a new package specefically for the use of these frameworks.

We continue to push updates and add further enhacements to the design system.

  • Updating the core and all plugins used in the design system.
  • Adding functionality for build examples with Webpack and Gulp.
  • Blocks to add new variations for hero section and statistics.
  • Improvements to the bundled JavaScript for enhacements in interactive components.
  • Components to include drawer and feed.

Along with improvements on the design system, we will also be holding a workshop about the trends of web design and improvements in accessibility in 2024.

We will also be introducing layouts for portal's and a consistent recomended layout for post authentication pages. This will form the basis of how to design service protals.
